JERUSALEM. IndustrialPunch : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political bloc remained short of a parliamentary majority in preliminary election results, as vote counting continued across the country. The figures indicate that Netanyahu could face challenges in securing the support required to form a majority government in the 120-member Knesset, Israel’s parliament.
According to Israeli media reports citing the Central Elections Committee (CEC), approximately 93 per cent of ballot boxes had been counted. Based on the provisional figures, Netanyahu’s bloc was projected to secure 53 seats, while the opposition bloc led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot was projected to win 48 seats. Arab-led parties were projected to secure 19 seats.
The preliminary distribution leaves Netanyahu’s bloc eight seats short of the 61 required for a parliamentary majority. The opposition bloc, meanwhile, would also need additional support to reach the majority threshold if its projected seat count remains unchanged.
Remaining Votes Could Affect the Final Outcome
The Central Elections Committee said that the remaining seven per cent of ordinary ballots required additional oversight. As a result, the seat projections remain provisional and could change as the counting and verification process progresses.
The final distribution of seats will be important in determining the political options available to the competing blocs. In Israel’s parliamentary system, a party or political bloc generally needs the support of at least 61 members of the Knesset to command a majority.
The projected 19 seats for Arab-led parties could also become significant in the post-election political calculations, depending on how the final results develop and what positions the different parties take during any subsequent government-formation process.
Final Results Remain Crucial
With the count still underway, the preliminary figures do not establish the final composition of the Knesset or determine which political bloc will ultimately be able to form a government. Further counting, verification and the final official results will be necessary before the parliamentary balance becomes clear.
For now, the reported projections show Netanyahu’s bloc leading the opposition bloc in the preliminary seat count but remaining below the majority threshold. The final outcome will depend on the confirmed results and the political alignments that follow.
