Union Commerce and Industry minister Piyush Goyal urged upon the Gems and Jewellery industry in India to be Atma Nirbhar.

Interacting with the industry representatives in Bengaluru today, the minister stressed on the need to have a self regulatory body akin to World Gold Council’s Swarn Adarsh Abhiyan under RGIP programme.

He also emphasized on self reliance. He suggested the creation of a Credit Guarantee Fund to facilitate smoother trade with accessibility to easy finance.

He said that the industry could provide affordable housing on rental basis for their workers using the Affordable Rental Housing Complexes sub scheme under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban. He assured industry leaders that he will look into the issue of allowing hand carriage of gems and jewellery in ports like Mumbai and Kolkata.

He informed that the negotiations for the Free Trade Agreement is going on with Australia, UK and UAE and could be finalised once the international COVID restrictions are lifted.

On Hallmarking of jewellery, the minister said that during the implementation stage no action will be taken against trade bodies till November 30.

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council had organised the minister’s interaction session today during the India International Jewellery Show in Bengaluru.

Over 100 leading manufacturers, retailers, exporters, trade associations, international buyers participated in the show.

The five day show that concluded today, hosted 1300 exhibitors across 2500 booths.
