The pilot project has been awarded by the Energy Transition and Policy Research Department of NTPC Engineering, in collaboration with Corporate Contract Services.

The project awarded to M/s Amara Raja Private Ltd on 29th May is part of NTPC’s broader vision to accelerate the shift towards cleaner and more sustainable backup power solutions.

In Phase I, the technical feasibility of using BESS to meet emergency load requirements of the thermal power plant in the event of a grid supply failure shall be established. In Phase-II, multiple application use cases such as time-shifted energy usage, ramp-up/down support, etc., along with emergency power back-up shall be explored to assess the commercial viability of DG replacement with BESS in thermal power plants.

This pilot can provide a pathway to efficiently utilize the Depth of Discharge (DoD) capacity of large-scale BESS, envisaged for flexible operation of thermal power plants, to provide backup power, thereby eliminating the need for separate backup systems.

The insights gained from this pilot will help NTPC Engineering to shape future strategies and evaluate the possibility of expanding this solution across NTPC.
