Ranchi. IndustrialPunch : Mr. Bernard Lynch, Australian Consul-General in Kolkata, along with Ms. Angelina Nair, Senior Research and Visits Officer at the Australian Consulate-General, Kolkata, visited Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) headquarters in Ranchi and held discussions with senior CMPDI officials to explore opportunities for collaboration in advanced mining technologies.
The visiting delegation met Shri Ajay Kumar, Director (Technical/Planning & Design), CMPDI, and other senior officials. The discussions centered on strengthening technology cooperation and knowledge exchange between India and Australia in key areas of the mining sector.
Focus on Advanced Mining Technologies
During the meeting, both sides explored potential collaboration in several strategic domains, including mine planning and digitisation, underground mine control, communication and safety systems, underground and surface coal gasification, research and development, sustainability and decarbonisation, geomatics services, and coal and mineral beneficiation.
The discussions reflected a shared interest in leveraging technological innovation to improve mining efficiency, safety and environmental performance.
Push for Government-to-Government Cooperation
Shri Ajay Kumar highlighted the importance of Government-to-Government (G2G) engagement to accelerate cooperation in advanced mining technologies. He emphasized that stronger institutional partnerships could help facilitate technology transfer, research collaboration and capacity building in the mining sector.
Follow-Up to Coal Ministry Delegation Visit
The engagement follows the visit of a high-level Indian delegation to Australia led by the Ministry of Coal in January 2026. During that visit, opportunities were explored for deeper partnerships with Australia’s Mining Equipment, Technology and Services (METS) industry, along with cooperation in the field of critical minerals.
The latest interaction between CMPDI and the Australian Consulate-General is seen as a continuation of those efforts aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation in mining technology and innovation.
Strengthening India-Australia Mining Partnership
The meeting reinforced the shared India-Australia vision of using technology, innovation and expertise to support the future of sustainable and responsible mining. Both sides recognized the importance of advanced technologies in addressing the evolving challenges of resource development, environmental management and energy transition.
The engagement is expected to open new avenues for collaboration in modern mining practices, research initiatives and sustainable resource management.
