Good news for the Indian market! The Government of India has announced that now Indian fruit markets – mangoes and pomegranate will be getting access to the US market. This is another boost to the Indo – US Trade.
Department of Agriculture and farmer’s welfare (DAC&FW) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) signed a framework agreement under the 12th India – USA TPF meeting held on 23 November 2021. The Agreement relates to the implementation of 2 Vs 2 Agri market access issues i.e inspection/ oversight transfer for Indian mangoes & pomegranate and market access for pomegranate arils from India and market access for US cherries and U.S Alfalfa hay.
Exports to begin in February
The mango and pomegranate exports will begin from January – February 2022 while pomegranate aril exports from April 2022. On the other hand, the exports of Alfalfa hay and cherries from the USA will start from April this year.
Further, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) has also conveyed its readiness to provide market access for US pork. It has also requested the US side to share a signed copy of the final sanitary certificate for finalizing the same.
Impact
This trade agreement between the two economies will not only expand the export prospects but will also prove beneficial for the farmers. It will expand their income and motivate more farmers in taking up the cultivation of these fruits.
India is already taking several measures to expand exports from the country. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has been taking initiatives to promote the export of Indian produce across the globe.
Recently the Ministry of Commerce & Industry informed that as per the Preliminary Data for December 2021, India’s merchandise export in December 2021 was USD 37.29 billion, the highest ever monthly achievement, which shows an increase of 37.0% over USD 27.22 billion in December 2020 and an increase of 37.55% over USD 27.11 billion in December 2019.
