India’s leading oil and gas producer, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), has bid farewell to its first Director (Production), Pankaj Kumar, who retired after an illustrious career spanning nearly 39 years in the country’s upstream energy sector.
A Chemical Engineer by profession, Kumar joined ONGC in 1987 and steadily rose through the ranks, holding several key operational and strategic positions across Mumbai Offshore, Assam, Dehradun, Ahmedabad, Cambay, and Delhi. His extensive experience covered production operations, offshore management, well services, reservoir management, exploration, corporate planning, joint ventures, and asset leadership.
Throughout his career, Kumar played a pivotal role in improving reservoir performance, maximizing hydrocarbon recovery, and enhancing production efficiency. His expertise in integrating reservoir management with operational execution helped strengthen ONGC’s upstream operations while supporting India’s energy security objectives.
As Asset Manager of Cambay and Ahmedabad Assets, he successfully led initiatives focused on production enhancement, operational efficiency, and sustainable asset growth. His leadership emphasized innovation, collaboration, and disciplined execution, resulting in improved operational performance across the assets under his charge.
Kumar later served as Director (Offshore) before becoming ONGC’s first-ever Director (Production), a position in which he guided the company through a significant phase of transformation. Under his leadership, ONGC accelerated production optimization, strengthened integrated reservoir management, promoted digital technologies, and expanded data-driven decision-making to improve operational reliability and efficiency.
Widely respected for his calm leadership style and balanced decision-making, Kumar earned admiration across the organization for his accessibility, technical excellence, and commitment to mentoring future leaders. His ability to bridge field operations with corporate strategy helped shape several key production and operational initiatives within ONGC.
Beyond production achievements, his contributions include strengthening organizational capabilities, modernizing operational systems, and developing a culture of continuous improvement across the company. His leadership has left a lasting impact on ONGC’s operational framework and the professionals he mentored throughout his career.
