BJP’s S Phangnon Konyak to become Nagaland’s first woman Rajya Sabha MP

In Nagaland, BJP’s nominee S Phangnon Konyak is set to become the first woman to be elected as Member of Parliament for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat

In Nagaland, BJP’s nominee S Phangnon Konyak is set to become the first woman to be elected as Member of Parliament for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat. Konyak, 44 years old is the incumbent Mahila Morcha President Nagaland unit, hailing from Mon district.

On the last day of the filing of nomination today, she was the only candidate who filed her nomination paper in the office of the Returning Officer of Biennial Elections 2022 at Assembly Secretariat Kohima. With her lone nomination for the Rajya Sabha, she will be elected unopposed.

Creating history, Konyak becomes the second woman after Rana M Shazia to enter any Parliament House. It was in 1977 when Shaiza was elected to the Lok Sabha from Nagaland. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, State BJP President Temjem Imna Along and a host of party workers were present during the filing of nomination.

The poll for the Rajya Sabha seat in Nagaland is scheduled 31st of last month.

After filing her nomination, Konyak told media persons that she feels elated that her party which always focuses on women empowerment has given her the opportunity.
