New Delhi. IndustrialPunch : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday met Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The two leaders reviewed progress in India-Russia bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including defence, energy, trade, space, skill mobility and people-to-people relations.
The meeting marked the second interaction between Modi and Putin this year. The leaders had earlier met on August 31 on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek.
Focus on Economic and Industrial Cooperation
During the meeting, Modi and Putin discussed ways to strengthen economic and industrial ties between the two countries. They welcomed the first-ever INNOPROM India industrial exhibition, organised in India from September 9 to 11.
The leaders underlined the importance of the exhibition in expanding bilateral trade, investment and industrial cooperation. They also visited the exhibition and interacted with participating stakeholders from the industrial and business sectors.
Regional and Global Issues Discussed
The two leaders also exchanged views on India-Russia cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly BRICS under India’s 2026 chairship.
They discussed regional and global developments, including conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region. Both sides noted the impact of these conflicts on maritime trade and the safety and security of Indian seafarers.
Prime Minister Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the way forward for resolving conflicts. He also conveyed India’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts.
Putin Invites Modi to Russia
Modi and Putin agreed to maintain close engagement to further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.
President Putin invited Prime Minister Modi to Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. Modi accepted the invitation, while the dates of the summit will be finalised through diplomatic channels according to mutual convenience.
Modi Gifts Russian Translation of Thirukkural
Following the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared a video of his interaction with President Putin on social media. He also presented Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, the classical Tamil text associated with the teachings of poet-saint Thiruvalluvar.
Modi said the translation would carry the eternal wisdom of Thiruvalluvar across languages and borders.
