BALCO, a Vedanta Group subsidiary, has commenced metal production for the first time from the country’s largest 525 kilo ampere smelter as part of its 1 million tonne per annum (MTPA) expansion project. This will further strengthen BALCO’s position in the Indian aluminium industry. This technological advancement surpasses the previous national standard of 378 ka and is poised to set new benchmarks in various parameters, efficiency, and operational excellence.
With the commissioning of the new 0.435 mtpa smelter, BALCO’s total aluminium production capacity will reach one million tonne per annum. This will place the company among a select group of global producers in the million-tonne club. This expansion is in line with the Government of India’s Make in India vision.
By ensuring widespread availability of domestically produced, high-quality aluminum for critical sectors such as defense, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, and power transmission, BALCO has elevated the country’s self-reliance to new heights. With a contribution of over 20 percent to India’s total aluminum production, BALCO will be positioned as a leader in industrial progress in the country.
This achievement is driven by the collaboration of leading global and domestic partners, including Larsen & Toubro, Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), Siemens, and Gudyang Aluminum Magnesium Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd., who have coordinated BALCO’s deployment of advanced engineering, automation, and efficiency-driven systems at the new smelter.
Downstream Capacity Expansion: CEO Rajesh Kumar
Chief Executive Officer and Director Rajesh Kumar said, “BALCO has made a significant impact by entering the million-tonne club. Aluminum is a metal of national importance, widely used in strategic sectors and daily life.” Through this expansion, we are not only boosting domestic capacity but also creating new employment opportunities. Aluminum-based industries will receive a boost and accelerate economic growth in Chhattisgarh and other regions. Kumar stated that Balco is expanding its downstream capacity to meet the growing demand for advanced aluminum applications in India. The company has modernized and expanded its rolled products facility to 1.8 lakh tons per annum. Additionally, a new 50 ktpa wire rod line has been commissioned, increasing Balco’s total wire rod capacity to 2.3 ktpa. These investments will expand the company’s value-added product portfolio and improve India’s manufacturing competitiveness. Balco’s capacity expansion of 1 mtpa will increase Vedanta Aluminum’s capacity to 2.8 mtpa, making it the world’s largest aluminum producer.
