A group of IAS Officer Trainees of the 2025 batch visited South Eastern Coalfields Limited’s Gevra Mine on 01 Dec 2025 as part of their Winter Study Tour (WST), an integral component of the IAS Professional Course (Phase-I) conducted by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.

The visit formed part of the Commerce & Industry, Finance & Economy, and Resources Sector module of the Winter Study Tour, designed to provide officer trainees with first-hand exposure to the functioning of key public sector institutions and strategic resource sectors.

During the visit, the trainees were introduced to large-scale opencast mining operations at Gevra Mine, Asia’s largest coal mine, and were briefed on SECL’s role in ensuring national energy security.

The trainee officers visited the active mine face and witnessed first-hand large-scale opencast mining operations.

SECL officials made detailed presentations on coal production processes, mine planning, safety management systems, deployment of advanced mining technologies, environmental management practices, and sustainable mining initiatives.

Special emphasis was laid on achieving high-volume production while ensuring ecological responsibility, strict regulatory compliance, scientific land reclamation, and sustained community development.
