Railways gear to provide a World Class Wrestling academy with advanced training facilities

The Minister of Railways had committed Indian Railways wrestlers to provide the state-of-art wrestling academy at the earliest.

With the vision to provide the best facilities to sportspersons in India, the Indian Railways has geared to facilitate a world-class wrestling academy at Kishanganj in the National capital of the country. The Minister of Railways had committed Indian Railways wrestlers to provide the state-of-art wrestling academy at the earliest.

The Ministry said in a statement, “In order to fulfil the commitment to provide a World Class Wrestling academy in Railways, work has been sanctioned to establish the same at Kishanganj, Delhi at an approximate cost of Rs. 30.76 crores and will be another feather in the Cap of Railways.”

Opportunities for wrestlers to become champions:

Exclusively made for wrestling, this academy will be the biggest facility in the country and will serve as a platform to provide an opportunity to many budding wrestlers to become champions in the times to come. Indian Railways, in a statement, said that the ministry has played a paramount role in promoting wrestling in India. Citing examples, the Ministry’s statement said that most of the elite wrestlers are from Railways and most of the medals won by India in wrestling in Olympics were from India Railways including

– Sushil (2008 & 2012)
– Sakshi Malik (2016)
-Ravi Kumar and Bajrang (2020)

Recently, in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, the Indian Railways sportsperson (IR) performance have been commendable and out of 7 medals won by India 3 Individual medals are by Mirabai Chanu (Silver in weightlifting), Ravi Kumar (Silver in Wrestling), Bajrang (Bronze in wrestling) and in Bronze medallist Indian Hockey Men team, two players were from IR.

Support extended by Indian Railways:

Indian Railway is contributing to the promotion of sports through Railway Sports Promotion Board in the country. Railways have supported the sizable number of sportspersons by giving them job security with various incentives. As of date, more than 9,000 sportspersons are on roll in 29 game disciplines in Indian Railways.

The ministry further said railway sportspersons have brought laurels for the country in all mega sports events like Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games etc. Railways sportspersons have been honoured with 27 Padamshree, 176 Arjuna, 12 Dhyanchand, 14 Dronacharya and 9 Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards for their outstanding sports achievements.

India taking big strides in infra:

In Tokyo Olympics, India was represented by its largest-ever contingent of 127 athletes. Among them, seven medals, including a gold was returned home, hence, setting India’s trajectory in sports. Thanks to the excellent training and mentoring before the mega sports event. Indian sports is growing exponentially. In view of aiding India’s preparations for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games this year, the allocation for the Union Sports budget received an increase of Rs. 305.58 crore.
