Mumbai. IndustrialPunch : Vedanta Copper plans to invest approximately USD 2.3 billion over the next three to four years to expand its copper production capacity and take total annual output beyond 1 million tonnes by 2030.
A major portion of the proposed investment will be directed toward Vedanta’s integrated copper operations in Saudi Arabia, covering mining, smelting and copper rod production. The company is also expecting a final investment decision on a new smelter in Saudi Arabia during the current quarter.
Focus on Saudi Arabia and India
Alongside its international expansion, Vedanta is pursuing the judicial restart of its long-shut Tuticorin copper smelter in Tamil Nadu. The company is also awaiting a court verdict on its proposed “green copper” project.
If the proposal receives approval, Vedanta plans to invest around USD 250 million to refurbish the Tuticorin facility. The revamped plant is targeted to produce around 2,50,000 tonnes of copper annually, with enhanced environmental controls and greater use of renewable energy.
Silvassa plant operating at high capacity
Meanwhile, Vedanta’s Silvassa copper facility continues to operate at a high level, with utilisation of nearly 95% of capacity. The plant is currently generating an annualised production rate of more than 2,45,000 tonnes.
The strong performance of the Silvassa facility, combined with planned investments in Saudi Arabia and the potential revival of the Tuticorin smelter, forms a key part of Vedanta Copper’s strategy to expand its presence across both domestic and international markets.
Production target crosses one million tonnes
With the planned investments, Vedanta is targeting a significant increase in its copper production capacity, with annual production expected to exceed one million tonnes by 2030.
The proposed expansion reflects the company’s focus on increasing integrated copper production across mining, smelting and downstream copper rod manufacturing, while also pursuing projects based on enhanced environmental standards and renewable energy.
