New Delhi. IndustrialPunch : Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday to attend the 18th BRICS Summit. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada received Xi at the airport. The Chinese President was accorded a cultural welcome, with dance performances by troupes from the Northeast and other parts of India.
Xi is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the summit. The visit is being closely watched as India and China seek to improve bilateral ties after years of tension along the Line of Actual Control. It is Xi’s first visit to India in nearly seven years.
Xi’s delegation includes Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is also part of the delegation.
Ahead of the proposed Modi-Xi meeting, Chinese officials and commentators have highlighted the importance of communication, cooperation and the peaceful management of differences. The discussions are expected to cover bilateral relations, trade, border management and regional security.
China is scheduled to assume the rotating presidency of BRICS in 2027. Beijing is expected to focus on Global South cooperation, multilateralism, digital economy, green development, artificial intelligence, poverty reduction and agricultural development during its upcoming BRICS leadership.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” New Delhi aims to strengthen BRICS as a constructive and solutions-oriented platform while highlighting the aspirations and development priorities of the Global South.
