New Delhi. IndustrialPunch : BRICS leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, while calling for long-term sustainability of space activities and prevention of an arms race in outer space.
The New Delhi Declaration, adopted at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12, appreciated the achievements of the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation (RSSC) in using space technology to address global challenges and promote socio-economic development.
The leaders also welcomed progress on amending the BRICS RSSC Agreement to include new space agencies and drafting the Terms of Reference for the BRICS Space Council. Discussions at the BRICS Heads of Space Agencies meeting in Bengaluru highlighted the need for space-debris mitigation.
BRICS leaders reiterated their support for Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space (PAROS) and opposed the weaponisation of space, threats or use of force against outer-space objects. They also backed negotiations for a legally binding multilateral instrument, along with transparency and confidence-building measures to strengthen global space security.
