Covering a distance of 46 km in less than 25 minutes, the World’s Largest Postal Network ‘India Post’ successfully delivered a mail using a ‘drone’ in Gujarat’s Kutch district.

In the first such development in the country, the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications collaborated with Gurugram-based start-up TechEagle to operate the firm’s drone to deliver a mail under a pilot project that would pave the way for postal deliveries through UAV in the country.

Under the project, the drone was launched from Habay village in Bhuj taluka to Ner village in Bhachau taluka of Kutch district to deliver a medical parcel by the postal department under the guidance of the Union ministry of communications.

As per the release issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) in Ahmedabad, “It took 25 minutes for the parcel to reach the destination located 46 km from the originating point. It was a medical parcel.”

It is noteworthy that the delivery time taken by the drone was five-times faster than surface transportation, TechEagle said in a release.

Further, the pilot project specifically studied the cost of delivery by drones and the geographical location between the two centers, along with the possible coordination among staff during the delivery process, including possible roadblocks.

India’s fastest hybrid-electric drone

TechEagle had recently launched India’s fastest hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) 100-km range drone ‘VertiplaneX3,’ which can carry a payload capacity of 3-kg and rover at a top speed of 120 km per hour.

The deep-tech drone technology startup mentioned the capability of the drone take-off and vertically landing like a helicopter from a small area of 5mX5m.

Interestingly, VertiplaneX3 was showcased by the firm during the recently-concluded country’s biggest drone fest ‘Bharat Drone Mahotsav’ in New Delhi.

The pilot project was aimed at testing the operational and technical feasibility of drone deliveries in the region along with commercial scalability. With the success of this pilot project, it will now be possible to make postal deliveries by drone in the future, the statement by the startup stated.

Interacting with the media, Anshu Abhishek, co-founder-COO at TechEagle mentioned that the technology needs to create real value for society by providing better accessibility to services, “The TechEagle is proud to partner with India Post, which is the most widely-distributed postal department in the world, to deliver parcels to remote and rural areas,” he said.

This project was aimed at enabling faster deliveries across the country be it in urban cities or any rural village, he added.
